On March 22, 2017 the Wausau Community was devastated by an act of violence that took the lives of 4 community members. Detective Jason Weiland, one of the victims, was on duty at the time of the incident and heroically gave his life protecting the citizens of our community. In the days following the tragedy, the Everest Metro Police Department’s “Blue” family came together to support Jason’s daughters, Ella and Anna, his wife, Kara and one another. There had always been a strong bond amongst the members of this small department and their families. Through the days of the funeral and as the healing process began, this bond truly connected the “hearts” of the wives and significant others. In the months that followed, the EMPD Blue Hearts began to focus on how we could move forward in a positive way and turn our pain and sadness into something beautiful and healing for ourselves and others. Thus the mission of the EMPD Blue Hearts became clear, “Supporting local law enforcement, their families, the communities they live in, and the loved ones of fallen officers nationwide.”
